Les commandements du
Parc National des Pyrenees

On the occasion of the creation of the National Park in the Vanoise, Samivel who was a French painter and a mountain poet, wrote these "commandments" for the French National Parks. It's a remarkable piece of writing which could apply to any mountain region and it is reproduced here in French and English as a source of reflection, of inspiration and of action.

Parc National des Pyrénées

- Le Parc National protège contre l'ignorance et le vandalisme des biens et des beautés qui appartiennent a tous.

- Les défenseurs de la vie sont les amis du Parc National. Les amis du progrès et de la paix sont les amis du Pare National. Les sportifs, les artistes et les savants sont les amis du Parc National.

- Voici l'espace, voici l'air pur, voici le silence.
Le royaume des aurores intactes et des bêtes naïves, tout ce qui vous manque dans les villes est ici préservé pour votre joie.

- Eaux libres: hommes libres.
Ici commence la liberté, la liberté de se bien conduire.

- Les inconscients ne respectent pas la nature.
Ils croient se grandir en la polluant et ne savent même pas qu'elle se venge.
Puisez dans les trésors des hauteurs, mais qu'ils brillent après vous pour tous les autres.

- La faiblesse a peur des grands espaces.
La sottise a peur du silence.
Ouvrez vos yeux et vos oreilles. Fermez vos transistors.

- Pas de bruits - Pas de cris - Pas de moteurs - Pas de klaxons.
Écoutez la musique de la montagne...

- Les vraies merveilles ne coûtent pas un centime
La marche nettoie la cervelle et rend gai.
Enterrez vos soucis, et vos boîtes de conserves.

- Un visiteur intelligent ne laisse aucune trace de son passage:
Ni inscription - ni destructions - ni désordre - ni déchets.
Les papiers gras sont les cartes de visites des mufles.

- Récoltez de beaux souvenirs mais ne cueillez pas les fleurs.
N'arrachez surtout pas les plantes: il pousserait des pierres.
Il faut beaucoup de brins d'herbe pour tisser un homme.

- Ravageurs de forêts = mauvais citoyens.
Qui détruit le nid, vide le ciel, rend la terre stérile.
Ennemi des bêtes = ennemi de la vie = ennemi de l'avenir.

- Oiseaux, marmottes, hermines, chamois, bouquetins
Et tout le petit peuple de poil et de plume
Ont désormais besoin de votre amitié pour survivre.
Déclarez la paix aux animaux timides.
Ne les troublez pas dans leurs affaires.
Afin que les printemps futurs réjouissent encore vos enfants.

- Défense ici de chasser sauf aux images.
N'allumez pas de feu au hasard. Ne campez pas n'importe où.
Certains gestes irréfléchis peuvent tout compromettre.

- Le Parc National, c'est le grand jardin français
Et c'est aussi votre héritage personnel.
Acceptez consciemment, de bon coeur, ses disciplines.
Et gardez-le vous-même contre le vandalisme et l'ignorance.

The Commandments of the French National Parks

- This National Park protects against ignorance and vandalism, the good and the beautiful things within it which are there to be shared by all.

- The defenders of life are the friends of the National Park. The friends of progress and peace are the friends of the national park. Sports people, artists and the learned are the friends of the national park.

- Here is the open space, the pure air, the silence. The kingdom of unspoiled daybreaks and innocent animals. Everything which you lack in the cities, is here preserved for your joy.

- Free water, Free Men. Here begins the land of freedom. A freedom in which you can immerse yourself.

- The thoughtless don't respect nature. They believe in making things bigger, in polluting, without realising that there is a price to pay: Draw from the treasure of high places but leave it shining after you, for all others.

- The weak fear great open spaces, the foolish fear silence. Open your eyes and your ears. Turn off your radios. No noise, no cries, no motors, no horns. Listen to the music of the mountain.

- The real wonders do not cost a cent. Walking cleans your mind and leaves you joyful. Bury your worries and not your tin cans.

- The intelligent visitor leaves no trace of their passing. No markings. No damage. No disorder. No Waste. Litter is the visiting card of louts.

- Gather good memories but do not pick the flowers. Do not uproot the plants, they keep in place the rocks. It takes many blades of grass to weave a man.

- Destroyer of the forest: bad citizen, who destroys the empty nest of the sky and leaves the ground barren. Enemy of animals: Enemy of life: Enemy of the future.

- Birds, marmots, stoats, izards, ibex, and all the lower classes of fur and feather - from this point on, they need your friendship to survive. Declare peace with the timid animals. Don't trouble them or their affairs. In this way the springtimes of the future will still give joy to your children.

- Shooting is forbidden here, apart from pictures. Do not light fires. Do not camp just anywhere. Certain thoughtless actions can compromise everything.

- The National Park is the great garden of the French and it is also your personal heritage. With good heart, knowingly accept these disciplines and you yourself defend against vandalism and ignorance"
