75th Anniversary Programme

The De La Salle scout Group Pipe Band will celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 2009 with the following programme of events.

February to April

Date Event
1st February Throughout February some youth members of the band will play with the Irish National Youth Pipe Band including on February 1st at a parade in Dublin.
7th February On February 7th the drummers will have an opportunity to show off there skills when they compete in the Jim O Neill Drum Classic.
14th February Over the years De La Salle Scout pipers and drummers have played in many parts of the world and on February 14th some members will participate in a Pipefest event in Paris.
21st February Irish National Youth Pipe Band concert in Tralee.
17th March Over St Patrick’s week the band will play at St Patrick’s Day Parades in Waterford, Dungarvan and Clonmel.
20th March On March 20th the band will play at Waterford’s Annual Burns night. This is an evening to enjoy some Scottish and Irish culture in the setting of Waterford Castle. This is one of the few fundraisers the band runs so your support would be greatly appreciated. Tickets will be available from Seamus Purcell.
27th March On March 27th the band will perform at the annual massed bands concert run jointly by all of the bands in Waterford City. This will support various charities including the cancer foundation.
5th April On the 5th of April it will be the turn of the pipers to show off their skills when they participate in the Munster Solo piping competition to be held in Newcastle West.

May

May will be a special month of celebrations as it was on May 15th 1934 that the first scout pipe band paraded out of the gates of Stephen St School and onto Patrick St.

Date Event
2nd May On May 2nd pipers and drummers from near and far will join with the scout band to form a massed pipe band to perform in the city centre and the Mayor of Waterford will be invited to meet the performers when the parade concludes. That evening there will be a special social event to mark the 75th anniversary of the band.
3rd May On May 3rd a mini pipe band competition will be held in Stephen Street School and will be followed by a massed band parade in the city centre.
15th May On May 15th the juvenile section of the De La Salle Scout Pipe Band will parade to the Cathedral to Celebrate St De La Salle’s and retrace the steps of the first parade of the band held on that date in 1934.
31st May On May 31st the band will travel to Cobh to compete in a pipe band competition.

June to August

Date Event
June & July During the months of June and July the band will perform each Monday night at the Plaza on the quay and also on a number of other Saturdays and Sundays in John Roberts Square and in the People’s Park.
June - TBC There will also be a BBQ in June to raise funds for the band and attendance and donations will be very much appreciated.
21st June On June 21st the band will compete in the Munster pipe band competition to be held in Tralee.
30th July - 9th August From July 30th to August 9th the band will perform in France at the Pan-Celtic Festival to be held in Lorient in Brittany.

September to December

Date Event
September & October Over the months on September and October the band will produce a CD and/or DVD which will be on sale in time for Christmas 2009.
15th November On November 15th the band will have a church parade and memorial service to remember those band and family members who have gone to their eternal rest.
December - TBC  In early December the band will draw its 75th celebrations to a conclusion with a concert at a venue yet to be decided.
