The 2007 Annual Camp for the 7th De La Salle Scout Troop was held from Monday the 6th to Sunday the 12th of August. After the Spraoi festival and the parade the night before, we left the den at 12.00pm on the Monday and headed for the De La Salle Scout Group’s Scout Centre at Faithlegg in Co. Waterford. Faithlegg is about nine kilometres east of Waterford City and is near Cheekpoint and the widest point of the River Suir. We cycled out with Patrice and Barry leading the way. When we got there we pitched the tents and got the campsite set up before getting stuck into a few games. Billy then arrived with the rest of the gear.

On Tuesday we started work on setting up a fairly serious obstacle course and had dinner at about 1.00pm before heading off on the bikes for Dunmore East and the adventure centre there. The activities we were doing were kayaking in the harbour and the indoor climbing wall which both went very well and were very enjoyable. At 7.00pm we left for Faithlegg and arrived back at about half past eight. We cooked a well deserved tea and did a bit of a cleanup then. There were four patrols on camp and we did centralised cooking. Each patrol was on a rota for the cooking and clean up each day.

The Marksmen
On Wednesday we did the obstacle course as well as volleyball, archery and soccer and played a good few games. We also cleaned out the store and pitched most of the tents in there so as to check them for damage. At about 4.30pm we went on a hike down to Cheekpoint to the shop and after dinner that night we had our first campfire.

On Thursday we went to Oakwood Theme Park In Wales. All of the usual rides like Speed, Megafobia, Hydro, The Bounce and Vertigo were taken in and the trip went very well. Meanwhile six of the lads decided to stay behind in Waterford but had a good day out as well. After breakfast in the Brassiere in town they went for a tour of Reginald's Tower and then to the pictures to see the Simpsons movie. After that it was up to army shop and the model shop before heading back to the pictures again to see Evan Almighty. The day went very well for both groups. We bought a model plane as a prize for best newcomer on camp who never complained and seemed to have enjoyed themselves. By 9.30pm on Thursday night everyone was back on the site including our new visitors from Serbia. They had been on the Jamboree in England for the last two weeks and had come over to Ireland then for a week so we let them stay in the hall.

Visitors from Serbia
Friday was a get to know me day for our lads and visitors. They went raft building and messing about in the Pill River watched by Roddy, Ken, Kate, the two Eoins and the two Marcos. Billy meanwhile brought a few with him into town to help with shopping for dinner. It rained that day but as we spent most of it getting wet anyway it didn’t really matter.

On Saturday, Roddy, Ken and Peter Murphy took all of our new Serbian Friends for a tour of the coast around Waterford Harbour from Dunmore East all the way around to Hook Head. Billy and the rest of the leaders ran camp for the day ending with biggest campfire of camp and burning three really old tents to show how easily they catch fire and how fast they go up in flames. One bell tent, one Icelandic and one family tent were sent to the great campsite in the sky. Each tent took about three minutes to burn and then they were completely gone. The campfire started at 10.00 didn’t finish until after midnight. The scouts then threw a surprise celebration party for Billy who was fairly shocked. Rumour has it that Billy is moving back to the Macaoimh after about 12 years leading the 7th. It was nearly 2.00am when the lads got to bed and we hear the leaders and visitors were up until dawn. There was even a traditional Serbian dinner and desert presented which were both very tasty. Sunrise was reported as being at 9.00am the next morning and after that we got stuck into taking down the campsite. We left for home at 11.05 and were back in the den at the school for 12.00. The lads had gotten very used to cycling over the week and had got a lot faster!

Bouncing...

On Sunday we met the Serbians at 7.00pm at Mahon Falls to bring them up the Comeragh mountains to see a good view of the whole county. On Monday they went on a tour of Waterford Crystal which finished with the buying of souvenirs of crystal to bring home and then it was into town for more jewellery and shopping. That night they also visited Tramore and the amusement arcade and Roddy and Billy brought the leaders for some traditional Irish music at T&H's in Waterford.

Billy's Celebration Night

The leaders of the 7th troop would like to thank Mary Winter, Siobhan Ryan, Maureen Drohan and the O’hOgartaigh Family for the home hospitality they provided to the Serbians and Pat Murphy for putting up the 3 leaders. We would like to thank Veronica, Clare, Siobhan and Maureen for going to Oakwood with the lads as well. Well done to all the scouts and leaders for making what was overall a great camp. Now of course we are guessing as to where we will end up next year?
