2008 Roundup

In 2008 Scouting Ireland celebrated 100 years of scouting in Ireland and the De La Salle Scout Group Pipe Band joined in fully in the celebrations.

Saint Patrick’s Weekend

The band was joined by Scottish members of the Scout Centenary Pipe Band and played at a special parade through Waterford City on Saturday 16th of March to celebrate 100 years of scouting in Ireland. On Patrick’s day it paraded in Waterford and Dungarvan and to finish off the weekend of celebrations it took part in the Clonmel Parade on March 18th. Over the weekend there were also a number of social events for the band members and its visitors from Scotland.

Summer Performances

Throughout the summer the band played on the Plaza on the Quay each Monday night and in other locations on various Saturday and Sundays in support of the Waterford City Council who provides the band with financial aid each year.

Edinburgh Cavalcade Parade

One of the major highlights for some band members was their participation once again in the Edinburgh Cavalcade. The band members of the 7th Scout Troop who were in Scotland for their annual camp were joined by a number of other De La Salle Scout Group pipers and drummers who were holidaying there at the same time and they all joined with the Scout Centenary Pipe Band. The SCPB was lead by a flag party from the 7th Waterford.

Irish National Jamboree

To finish of the summer season the band visited the Irish National Scout Jamboree in Punchastown and it played for the 12,500 scouts and their leaders who were attending Scouting Ireland’s main 100th year anniversary event.

Other events

Throughout the year the band played at various other events to support scouting, including a parade for the Dublina Scout County and the opening of the Dollymount Sea Scout Group scout hall. It also entertained the crowd prior to the Munster Pipe Band competition in Tralee.

Close of year Mass

The band played at the Scout Group’s close of year Mass in De La Salle College in November.

75th Anniversary Preparations

As 2008 drew to a close and in preparation for its 75th Anniversary celebration in 2009 the band members met on a number of occasions to agree a programme of events and on the Sunday prior to December 15th which was the anniversary date of the decision to start a pipe band in De La Salle the band had a performance and launched the 75th Anniversary programme to the De La Salle Community in Stephen Street, to the scout leaders and to the band’s families and friends.
