The 3rd De La Salle Scout Troop have created history by winning the 2000 All Ireland Scoutcraft Competition – the Melvin Trophy. The event was held at Larch Hill in Dublin from the 17th to the 20th of August and consisted of a challenging mix of campcraft and other scout skills. Site 14 were more than happy to win the competition with 1414 points and at the same time pick up the much coveted Campcraft trophy. For the second year in a row the 3rd were also awarded the Dermot Murphy memorial award for the bases. Patrol Leader, Patrick Kelly skillfully led the team which consisted of Leon Mullally APL, John Cummins, Kieran Gleeson, Conor Dempsey, Brian Brazil, Conor Welsh and Ian Griffin. The success was a testament to the many years of outstanding work and effort by Scoutleader Paschal Guilfoyle who applauded the excellent effort put in by both the team and by his Assistants Scoutleaders, Bernard Cunningham and David Collins.

The Unit first qualified for the All Ireland Scoutcraft Competition back in 1961 and have been back many times since. The 3rd and the 13th have recorded numerous near misses in the past decade in particular, which meant indescribable tension and emotion for the team and its numerous supporters as the final placings were called out at at Larch Hill. Congratulations to all who were involved in finally achieving what has been an ambition of the Unit for so many years.
